How to Choose a Photo for Your Personalized Gift

How to Choose a Photo for Your Personalized Gift, with a dog portrait in round and oval keepsake frames.

A favorite photo can turn a gift into a little reminder of someone you love. Whether you’re choosing a picture of your child, a beloved pet, or a special memory, a few simple checks can help you pick a photo that works well on a personalized gift.

1. Choose a photo with a clear face

Look for a picture where the person or pet is easy to see. Sharp eyes and recognizable details matter more than a perfect pose. A close-up often works well for a small photo charm because the face stays visible when the picture is reduced.

Photos with several people can be meaningful, but each face will appear smaller. For a small charm, consider a picture of one person or a close-up of two people.

2. Look for soft, even lighting

A photo taken near a window or outdoors in gentle daylight is a good starting point. Avoid pictures where the face is hidden in shadow, the light washes out important details, or motion makes the image blurry. For a pet photo, check that the eyes and fur are visible against the background.

3. Send the original photo when you can

The original photo from your phone or camera usually gives us more detail to work with than a screenshot or a picture saved from social media. Send the largest available version, and avoid adding filters or text over the face.

If an older photo is the memory you love most, ask us about it before ordering. You don’t need to rule it out simply because it wasn’t taken on a new phone.

4. Leave a little room around the subject

A photo may need to be cropped to fit the gift’s photo area. Pictures with a little space around the head are easier to position than ones where the top of the head or ears already touches the edge.

Round and oval photo areas can trim the edges of a rectangular picture. If something must stay in the crop—such as a pet’s ears, a second person, or a meaningful detail—tell us when you send your photo.

Leave room for round or oval cropping

Your gift may have a round or oval photo area. A little extra background around the head gives us room to fit your photo.

A quick photo checklist

  • The person or pet is clear and easy to recognize.
  • The face is well lit and in focus.
  • You have the original or largest available photo.
  • There is a little room around the head for cropping.
  • You have included your order number and any photo preferences.

The best photo is one that means something to you. These tips simply help that memory show clearly on your chosen gift.
